A stunning winery filled with points of interest, great wine, food and mead!

Maxwell Wines

As the tag line says, “Everything at Maxwell is Maxwell made”. Everything comes from the estate or one of its other Maxwell’s vineyards, and it is most certainly well-made. This tour is your chance to find out first-hand about the wines, the food and the mead. Maxwell is one of the Luxury Winery Tours lunch venue partners, so read more about the Maxwell Lunch Experience on our Lunch Options Page.

The layout of the winery provides views over the working winery from the tasting room, and the views over the vineyards are visible from both the dining room and an enclosed cellar door deck dining area.

The flagship McLaren Vale varieties of Grenache and Shiraz are well worth the visit but what is less well-known, especially if you are a first-time visitor to the region, is that Maxwell is the largest mead producer in the southern hemisphere. If you haven’t tried mead, you should!

The range of wines is substantial. Delicious sparkling, silky but robust and flavourful Shiraz, bright and open Grenache, Chardonnay, Riesling (Eden Valley), Verdelho, Cabernet, Tempranillo and blends, all from the Maxwell vineyards right here in McLaren Vale.

Kate Petering joined as Head Winemaker early in 2018 after serving in the same position at Mt Langi Ghiran where she climbed the ladder during her nine year career there. The shift from one Australia’s best cool climate Shiraz vineyards to the world renowned Shiraz region of McLaren Vale would seem to be a perfect fit. There is great interest in how Kate will use both her Victorian and international experience of vintages in France, Romagna, California and Italy to pursue the continuous quality improvement of the wines at Maxwell’s in McLaren Vale.

Winemaker

Kate Petering joined Maxwell Wines in early 2018. At the only 29, she has already achieved a great deal with four overseas vintages and has won the best red wine of show at the 2012 Royal Sydney Show.

Interesting Facts

Maxwell Wines has a limestone cave that now produces amazing mushrooms for the Maxwell restaurant. In 1916 the cave was dug out of the limestone hill to commercially grow mushrooms. The hill is home to some of the finest Maxwell vines producing their Lime Cave Cabernet Sauvignon.

The cave is still used to grow small quantities of mushrooms for the restaurant. The majority of its 50 metre length is also used for ‘long table functions’. An magical experience for those who choose it as their function venue.

Your Tasting Options

Luxury Winery Tours has worked with Maxwell Wines to provide an amazing food, wine and tour experience.

When you arrive at Maxwell you are greeted with a glass of their Envious Sparkling Chardonnay Pinot Noir to enjoy as we take a short tour of the winery. The Cellar Door tasting room overlooks the working winery, but on this tour you get to see how it all works through the stages of producing fine wines.

After the tour, we venture into the restaurant for a sumptuous “Feed Us” menu and a selection of matched wines (see the Lunch Options page for the Maxwell Lunch Experience). This is the perfect way to not only taste the wines but to translate the wine and food matching experience to your own home and entertaining.
