A McLaren Vale icon and maker of some of Australia’s best known and best quality wines.

Hardys Tintara Winery

As soon as you arrive at Hardys Tintara you can feel the history of one of Australia’s great icons of the international wine industry and you can sense the beginnings of a family empire that started right here in McLaren Vale six generations ago in 1853. A tour of the winery, which is even more interesting during the February to April vintage period when everything kicks into action, also allows an exploration of that rich history. This is something special.

The winery was established when Thomas Hardy converted the old flour mill into the Tintara winery in 1878. It has existed in this central, Main Road McLaren Vale location ever since, and has become an integral part of McLaren Vale’s history. Some of the facilities you can visit at the winery include the viewing platform that overlooks the working winery, the fortified room and the old barrel cellar.

The Hardy family has given us some of the best known names of the wine industry: Thomas Hardy, Eileen Hardy, and Sir James Hardy would be familiar to anyone who appreciates great wine.

Various tasting options are available to explore and experience the range, depth and quality of a McLaren Vale icon. Even better, Luxury Winery Tours has negotiated a special tasting for our customers that is sure to delight. See our Tastings information for details, including the possibility of a tasting in the historic James Hardy Room.

Winemaker

Paul Lapsley is the 19th Chief Winemaker at Hardys and, like all his predecessors, his mission is to fulfil Thomas Hardy’s vision of creating ‘wines that would be prized in all markets around the world’. He has been with Hardys since 2007 and was with Seppelt prior to joining Hardys. He will retire in November 2019 but his replacement has not yet been named.

Interesting Facts

Hardys Tintara is the producer of Australia’s oldest surviving bottle of wine. A Bordeaux-style blend from the 1867 vintage and labelled as Claret.

Onsite attractions:

The Hardys Tintara winery is a wonderful place to visit. Not only are the grounds beautiful but at every turn there is a part of history that brings fascination and enjoyment. Onsite you can visit the viewing platform that overlooks the working winery. During vintage it is fascinating to watch it all in action. There is also the Fortified Room that houses historical artefacts, including an antique model of a brandy still.

As you enter the grounds, you also see the Fleurieu Arthouse which is well worth a visit. It houses artist studios and a large display of their products, many of which can be purchased as a special piece of memorabilia to take home, perhaps even after speaking with the artist who produced it

Hardy's Tintara Tasting Options

The Icon Wines

The Icon Wines are named after the founder of Hardys wines (Thomas Hardy) and one of the pioneers of the Australian wine industry (Eileen Hardy) these wines are testament to Hardys long history of multi-regional blending dating back to 1865.  Only made in the best vintages, Hardys best examples of Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, Shiraz and Cabernet Sauvignon are represented under these labels.

The Tintara Single Vineyard Collection of Shiraz

Wines from small sub-regions of McLaren Vale provide a wonderful insight into the complexity and richness shown by this great variety.  What is in each bottle highlights the uniqueness of each vineyard site.  The aromatics, tannins and flavours are vastly different, attributed to contrasting soil, vine age, clone, aspect and elevation of each site.
